Frequently Asked Questions about Naxos & Villa La Natura

What is the best way to get to Naxos?

The easiest option is the ferry from Athens (Piraeus port) – the crossing takes between 3.5 and 5.5 hours depending on the ferry type. There are also direct flights from Athens (approx. 35 minutes) and seasonal direct flights from several European cities in summer. We love the ferry: you sail right into the heart of Naxos Town – absolutely unforgettable.

Do you need a car on Naxos?

Yes, a rental car is highly recommended if you want to explore the island comfortably – especially to reach the beautiful southern beaches and the mountain villages. Naxos Town itself is walkable, but the best spots – like Plaka, Mikri Vigla and the hilltop villages – are hard to reach without a car. We recommend an SUV for the winding Greek hill roads around the villa.

When is the best time to visit Naxos?

May, June and September are the sweet spot: temperatures of 25–28°C, far fewer crowds and lower prices. July and August are peak season with up to 35°C and a livelier atmosphere – great for beach lovers, but book early. If you prefer peace and quiet, May or October is magical – the island blooms and the beaches are practically empty.

What is the weather like on Naxos in summer?

Naxos has a classic Mediterranean climate: sunny, dry summers with temperatures between 28–36°C and almost no rain from June through August. The Meltemi north wind provides natural cooling – a real bonus during the hottest weeks and a paradise for windsurfers. Sea temperatures reach 26–28°C in July and August.

How long should you stay on Naxos?

We recommend at least 7 nights – that gives you enough time to visit the best beaches, take a day trip into the mountains and spend relaxed evenings in Naxos Town. With 10–14 nights you can truly slow down and discover hidden corners. Shorter stays of 3–4 nights work well if Naxos is part of an island-hopping itinerary.

Which are the best beaches on Naxos?

Plaka Beach is the most famous – kilometres of white sand and turquoise water, simply stunning. Mikri Vigla is the go-to spot for windsurfers and kite surfers, while Orkos offers quiet coves away from the crowds. Agios Prokopios and Agios Georgios are great for families with young children. From Villa La Natura, all of these beaches are less than 10 minutes away by car.

Is Naxos family-friendly?

Yes – Naxos is widely considered one of the most family-friendly islands in the Cyclades. The shallow, sheltered beaches at Agios Georgios and Agios Prokopios are perfect for young children. The island is greener, calmer and less crowded than Santorini or Mykonos – with fresh local produce and a truly relaxed pace of life.

Is Naxos more expensive than Santorini or Mykonos?

No – Naxos is significantly more affordable than Santorini or Mykonos. Restaurants, car rentals and accommodation cost on average 30–50% less than on the more famous neighbouring islands. The beaches are just as beautiful, the water just as clear – without the crowds and without the eye-watering price tags.

What is there to do on Naxos?

The island offers impressive variety: windsurfing and kitesurfing at Mikri Vigla, hiking through mountain villages, exploring the Venetian Kastro and the iconic Portara in Naxos Town, dining at authentic tavernas and tasting local Naxos cheese and spirits. Culture lovers should visit the Archaeological Museum and the ancient Kouros statues in the island interior.

Are there direct flights to Naxos from abroad?

Yes, in summer there are seasonal direct flights to Naxos (JNX) from several European cities. Outside peak season, the easiest route is a flight to Athens followed by a ferry or short domestic flight. The ferry from Athens is often the more memorable option – and we genuinely recommend it.

How big is Naxos and what is its capital?

Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades islands at around 430 km² – considerably bigger than Santorini or Mykonos. The capital is Naxos Town, also known as Chora, on the western coast at the main harbour. This is where you will find the Kastro, the Portara, the best nightlife and the finest restaurants on the island.

Can you windsurf and kitesurf on Naxos?

Absolutely – Naxos is one of the best destinations in Europe for both windsurfing and kitesurfing. The lagoon at Mikri Vigla is considered one of the top kite spots in the Mediterranean, with consistent Meltemi winds from July to September. Professional kite and windsurf schools operate directly on the beach, welcoming complete beginners and experienced riders alike.

How far is Villa La Natura from the beach?

The villa sits on the hillside of Agia Paraskevi, directly above the Plaka beach area. Plaka Beach is a 7-minute drive, Orkos is 5 minutes away and Mikri Vigla is 8 minutes by car. A rental car is essential, but it also means you can explore every corner of the island at your own pace.
